Hypertensive Retinopathy – Control Your High Blood Pressure
Hypertensive retinopathy is a new term to me, although both my mother and elder sister have hypertension (commonly referred to as high blood pressure). I wrote an article entitled: Hypertension Treatment Drug Removal Exposes Dangerous Side Effects and it helped me understand hypertension better. The article discussed how “Caution is needed in treating hypertension.” The challenge of proper drug treatment is one among many serious issues related to high blood pressure.
My sister has had hypertension for 17 years and her case is actually worse than my mother’s. Hypertension has jeopardized so many lives, that it is also known as the “silent killer”. As if the condition itself weren’t bad enough, hypertension can be linked to a number of serious medical conditions. It’s not unusual to see hypertension sufferers also combating other health issues. Excessively overweight and obese individuals have an increased risk for hypertension. That also puts them more at risk for other conditions resulting from improper blood flow. Hypertensive retinopathy is one of those related conditions. This is a condition that involves damage to the retina, due to hypertension. It can become so serious that it threatens a person’s eyesight.
Hypertension and Hypertensive Retinopathy
Hypertension is a condition that can cause the pressure in the eye to build, thus damaging the retina, the back part of the eye. My sister was diagnosed with hypertensive retinopathy and it has given us cause for concern. The doctor explained how hypertensive retinopathy develops. The longer a person has high blood pressure and the higher the pressure is will determine how extensive the damage to the retina is. My sister is nearing age 60 and has had hypertension for almost two decades. Not only is this not good, but being as she is overweight, this increases her health risks.
